Split Rings
Split rings in fishing are small, circular metal rings with overlapping ends (like a tiny key ring) used to connect components while still allowing free movement. They’re most commonly used to attach hooks to lures and to connect lures to swivels or solid rings.
In lure fishing, split rings let the hook swing independently from the lure body, which improves action and reduces the chance of fish using leverage to throw the hook. They’re widely used on hard-body lures, metal jigs, and topwater plugs when targeting species like Kingfish and Kahawai in NZ waters.
Split rings also make it easy to change hooks without damaging the lure. Heavy-duty versions are used for big, powerful fish, while lighter ones are used on smaller freshwater or soft plastic setups.
