Mutsu Circle Hooks
A Mutsu fishing hook (sometimes called a Mutsu circle or Japanese circle-style hook) is a strong, short-shank hook with a distinctly in-turned point and wide gape. It was designed in Japan for hard-fighting saltwater species and has become very popular in New Zealand, especially when anglers want solid hook-ups in the corner of the mouth.
Key Features:
Short, strong shank
Wide gape
Heavily in-turned (recurved) point – more aggressive than a standard circle hook
Heavy-gauge wire for powerful fish
Often offset slightly to improve hook-up rates
Popular For:
Snapper
Kingfish
Hapuka
Trevally
Used when:
Mutsu hooks are best used when targeting bigger, hard-fighting fish like Snapper and Kingfish, especially when fishing natural baits around reefs, rocks, or other structure. Their strong, in-turned point makes them ideal when you want solid corner-of-the-mouth hook-ups without striking hard, as they tend to set themselves when the fish moves off with the bait.
